Amazon.com Product Description There's nothing quite as refreshing as a good hike or snowshoe trip, but there's nothing quite as terrifying as getting lost on the trail. Enter the Bushnell GPS BackTrack personal locator, which gets you back to your car or home base safely and easily. The BackTrack is a breeze to use, with an intuitive two-button design that employs GPS technology in its most basic format. All you have to do is mark the location of your car, campsite, or anything else (the BackTrack stores up to three locations) and then forget it until it's time to return. At the end of the day, just select the stored location and the BackTrack will display the direction and distance to travel until you return. You can use it to locate a treestand or trailhead, to find your car in a crowded parking lot, even to rendezvous with a group. Plus, it's extremely compact, so you can stow it conveniently in your pocket, pack, or purse. The BackTrack is weather-resistant and operates on two AAA batteries (not included). It also comes with a lanyard for easy attachment. About Bushnell Bushnell has been the industry leader in high-performance sports optics for more than 50 years. Direction indicator is vague - common sense required. July 29, 2010 W. Davis (Templeton, CA) I've had my BackTrack for nearly 2 months now. Once you master what the 2 control buttons do, it's very simple to operate. It is quite accurate when identifying a location you've saved. I did a test by saving a spot in the middle of my front lawn. I turned the unit off, then turned it back on while standing a few feet away on the driveway. The BackTrack correctly identified that my saved location was about 5 yards away and it pointed in the correct direction. It helps if you are somewhat aware of your surroundings and can use some common sense along with the information displayed by the BackTrack in order to find your saved location.
I wouldn't rely too heavily on which way the direction arrow is pointing. When you're in the process of trying to return to a saved location, the direction arrow does not always point in the exact direction of your saved location. If you keep in mind that the direction indication is not exact, you'll find the BackTrack works quite well. The compass function works about as well as the direction finding indicator. When using the compass, the direction arrow points generally north. If an accurate compass is important to you, you might want to carry an old-fashioned magnetic compass as well.
Here are some important things to remember when using the BackTrack. Any time the unit is on, the back of the unit should be parallel with the ground. If you hold it like a compass, then drop your hand down to walk, then bring the unit back up level, your readings will probably not be accurate. Once the unit is powered off, you can put it into any orientation and the accuracy won't be affected. I made the mistake of accidentally not shutting off the unit before putting it in my pocket once. When I took it out again and powered it up, the compass was 180 degrees off. If you find the compass is that far off, walk in a figure-8 pattern a few times while holding the unit level and it should re-calibrate. If you have not moved a great distance since the last time you turned on your BackTrack, it does not take very long for it to get a satellite lock on its location. I've moved a couple of hundred miles, then turned the unit on and it took about a minute to lock in.
Even with the short-comings of the BackTrack, I am happy with it. For what the unit does, you can't beat the price.
Bushnell Backtracker July 28, 2010 BK Simply to use, good accuracy and a great price . Purchased to use when riding on ATV Trails. At the parking lot, set the point and drive off. Along the trails, set two addition points. Easy return to parking lot or other two points.
A hunter's perspective July 23, 2010 Randy Wilkinson (McKinney, TX) Used the BackTrack GPS during a Spring bear hunt. The device worked perfectly for finding our way back to the truck, the base camp, and on at least two occassions, going back to the location of downed animals the next morning. It does take a few minutes to load so plan accordingly...other hunters can get pretty impatient waiting for you to mark a location if you don't turn on the device until it's time to go. Even the guide was impressed by the small size of the GPS and its ability to get us back to the right locations.
bushnell backtrack July 23, 2010 fisher Excellent at locating previous locations that fish are being caught and returning me to within 1 or 2 feet from mark. This device worked much better than more expensive GPS devices. Simplicity is a key selling point. All my fishing buddies bought a backtrack after they saw mine and how it can help them return to "hotspots" in the lake.
Perfect product, fast shipping. Highly recommend - and have! July 10, 2010 JP (Northwoods) This is such a handly little tool, perfect for my needs. Have recommended to friends!
