3 out of 5 stars Cheap striker but functional   April 29, 2010
Dana O. H. Woodman (Sonoma County, CA, USA)
The striker broke in the first use, too thin and poorly made. Other than that it worked well if you make sure to scrap up a good pile of magnesium first.

5 out of 5 stars best of its kind   April 23, 2010

I've used devices like this before. Back in my Boy Scout days, when we weren't starting fires with them, we would spark them at one another. Don't worry, that's safe as long as you don't get it in anyone's eyes and aren't playing in dry pine forest. I don't recall the brand, but they lasted for years even with all the abuse.

These spark more readily, especially if you use the serrated grooves. With a slow and heavy stroke, you can get a long stream of sparks which should ignite your preferred tinder. I also use dryer lint. It ignites better than anything else I've seen and it's available for free and in large quantities with every dryer load!

I think the flint portion may be a softer alloy than my old ones. I seem to be wearing it down a lot faster. So, the old ones lasted me a few years, but considering I'm rarely deployed where I don't have a proper fire source and I've all but stopped camping, I think this one will serve me just fine. Reduced longevity is a small price to pay for a more effective fire starter.

And to be honest, I'll probably lose this long before I even come close to breaking it.

1 out of 5 stars Glad I wasn't in a survival situation...   March 14, 2010

Okay, I may not be Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild) or Les Stroud (Survivorman) but in my first attempt to use this product it failed completely. The core of the starter fell out of the holder after a few attempts. Then after a dozen more swipes of the scraper against the rod, the scraper snapped in half and the lanyard broke as well. (Incidently, the lanyard isn't long enough to allow you to hang this around your neck either).

Naturally, the serrated stamp-out makes for a weak point and I'm not sure what its purpose is anyway, considering that the end of the scraper has a notched groove in it as well. Personally, I would steer clear of this item in favor for a more well-constructed one. If you stick with this, be sure to bring along a couple of butane lighters with you too, or you might find yourself sleeping in the cold darkness.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but the steel striker snapped into 2 pieces at the weak middle V   March 14, 2010
fred (left coast)
My only complaint, and rather quickly I might add after recieving it, is the steel striker broke at the weak point, the middle, serrated V portion: snapped into 2 pieces..Mine was not like Amazon's picture, only had one V, not two (one on either side).

Use a cheap stainless steel knife blade: scared the crap outta me with gobs of white hot sparks everywhere, after limited but decent success with the 'end V' of the steel striker. That middle serrated V must me a surface conditioner: totally worthless.
